Clifton Nurseries, London

Landlocked in the middle of a block of white neoclassical villas, Clifton Nurseries has a particular naïve charm. To enter the garden centre, one has to pass between two of the villas down a narrow track, at the end of which is the delightful surprise of a mass of plants, garden furniture, greenhouse etc.

The shop is treated as an addition to a cold greenhouse and takes the form of a roofed timber pergola.  The materials – oak and copper – have the characteristic of becoming more interesting in appearance with the passage of time.
